Our first eco-schools conference

Students may be excited that the summer term is coming to a close but pupils at Skipton Girl’s High School and a multitude of other secondary schools have been partaking in something equally exciting in their last weeks of school: an Eco-Schools Conference. Run by Skipton Girls’ Eco-Committee leader Jordan Clarke, the day was a huge success with workshops, talks and an exhibition inspiring students to protect the environment, individually and as a school organisation. Natasha Donkin, a year 12 student and Eco-Committee member who helped to manage the day, said that the conference was important “to share ideas and achievements to help more schools on their journey to becoming an eco-school” while guest speakers like Craven Development Education Centre’s (Craven DEC) Gail Smith were quick to echo this: “it is crucial for schools to talk to each other and improve the school environment and environment in general”.

Stalls (1)

Craven DEC and Farming and Countryside Education were among those giving workshops before there were talks on plastic waste, Greenpeace’s work and careers linking to the environment. The students’ favourite was Kids Against Plastic- a teen sister duo who were equally relatable and inspiring, motivating students to think about their own plastic waste and help achieve their aim of collecting 100,000 pieces of plastic litter because “a small action can make a big difference”. The day concluded with an exhibition, featuring stalls from well-known charities such as Friends of The Earth to smaller organisations and Skipton Girls High School’s own Fairtrade Friends. Prior to leaving, those who had participated in the day gave a huge amount of positive feedback and thanks for a passionate, motivational and naturally very enjoyable day which all hope will become a recurring event in the future.

This conference was made possible with the support from Craven DEC and the Green Futures Project, part of the Our Bright Future lottery-funded initiative.
