Tea time concert cancelled
I have been fell-running from a young age and I love the exhilaration and thrill that I get from the sport. At the end of 2016 my dad and I had our 50th and 18th birthdays respectively. To celebrate this, we decided to do something special, focussing on our joint love of fell-running. Therefore, we have decided that, throughout 2017 we are going to run 900 miles of registered fell-races (competitive races only, training doesn’t count!) In order to raise money for British Heart Foundation.
The scope of this challenge only became apparent when we sat down to plan what races we wanted to do. I soon realised that the only way to fit in the miles required, alongside my A-level studies was to compete in the longest races I could find (within reason!). As a junior I had raced for no further than 10 miles so the prospect of running the longer senior races was daunting and exciting. In February I ran my first long run, The Wadsworth Trog at 19 miles. I completed the race in good time, but it left me thoroughly exhausted and sore for days afterwards. Despite it being one of the hardest things I have done, it made me want to run even further and harder. In the light of this my dad and I entered the 32 mile Haworth Hobble. I have never felt more nervous and apprehensive that I did, stood on the Hobble start line on a bitterly cold March morning in Haworth. I needn’t have worried as I enjoyed the race more than any I had done previously and finished in a good time of 6 hours and 38 minutes. I have now been well and truly hooked by the ultra-running bug, completing the 22 mile Edale skyline race last weekend, just two weeks after the Hobble. I have also entered the Yorkshire 3 Peaks race at the end of April and am looking forward to the opportunity to race longer and longer distances, perhaps one day I will complete the legendary Bob Graham which encompasses all the central lake district peaks.
