National Careers Week 2017

National Careers & Apprenticeship Week will take place between 6th March and 10th March 2017

Please see below for some useful tips and links for kick starting your career.

5 challenges to kick-start your career

“What do you want to do in the future?” Your students will be hearing that question right, left and centre! Many struggle to find the career path that’s right for them – but that’s where we come in. With National Careers Week around the corner, we’ve put together this week of fun challenges that will help them identify their skills and interests. Before you get started, make sure your students have their own Success at School profiles - it makes career planning so much easier and fun.

Here are five careers activities to do with your students:

Motivation Monday

Get your careers week off to a flying start with some inspirational stories (and practical tips) from Success at School. We’ve got interviews with pilots, nurses, game developers, designers, even dog groomers and everyone in between. They tell us what it’s really like to do their job – the ups and downs. Ask your students to visit our 60 Second Interviews and find a job role they identify with. What draws them to the profession? What do they think looks challenging?

Talent Tuesday

Every job requires young people to have a range of skills. Challenge your students to discover the skills they might already have. Encourage your students to check out this guide to the skills that employers want. Then they should make a checklist of what skills they already have, and what are the ones that need work.

Career Zone Wednesday

Your students' Wednesday challenge is to head over to our Career Zones. These pages give you the low-down on what all the work sectors are and what roles students could do. What roles match their skills? What careers do they like the sound of? Make sure your students are logged in to their profiles so they can easily favourite different career paths by starring them as they go. If they're ready for the next step, jump on to our Employers page, where you can read about different organisations and see what they're looking for in a great staff member!

CV Template Thursday

Now they’ve got some skills and work experience under their belts, it’s time to challenge your students to give their CVs a makeover.

Start by reading this guide which covers all the CV dos and don’ts. Then ask your students to use this template to create their own CV.

Friday Funday

Make working on your career easy and, yep fun, by using Success at School. Encourage students to continue completing their profiles by looking at the subjects section. What subjects are they studying? What are they gaining from each?

Next week is National Apprenticeship Week! University isn't the only option, so on Monday we'll be hitting up your inboxes with some super-useful tips about working, learning and earning all at the same time. Give yourself a head-start by checking out our Apprenticeships section
