Indian Music and Electronic Music Production Summer School 

A summer school on Indian music and electronic music production will be held at Skipton Girls' High School on the 28th and 29th July 2018. 

These free Sound and Music 'Go Compose' weekends offers girls (aged 10-15 yrs) a blended experience of electronic music production and Indian music practice for performance and composition. 

Students will:

  • learn how to use music technology to record the voice and other sounds 
  • learn how to edit audio using computer music software
  • learnd about digital performance instruments through practical project work
  • Use music technology to record sounds and Indian vocal techniques
  • develop a cultural insight into a different musical genre
  • learn about the “raga system” and how it works in Indian music
  • learn Indian music phrases and how to put them together to compose a melodies
  • learn how 'time cycles' and rhythm works in Indian music
  • develop an understanding of how to use the voice in a mindful way
  • work collaboratively to create a performance of Indian vocal techniques music technology equipment

Students will work with professional arts leaders Jess Aslan and Supriya Nagarajan with the support of Dr Liz Dobson (National Teaching Fellow, music technology lecturer at The University of Huddersfield and a diretor of the Yorkshire Sound Women Network).

Please note the following points:

  • No prior expeirence necessary
  • These activities will be documented and students will be supported in the building of an Arts Award portfolio
  • Students must bring their lunch and refreshments for the day
  • Students (and guardians) will be asked for permission to participate in education research observing confidence and learning gain in music technology. This work is subject to formal ethical approval.
  • Please register separately on each weekend.
  • Though the events are free they are funded and delivered by experts so please notify us or cancel in good time if you find that you cannot attend - we would like to make sure that the event is well attended
